Mit der vom Anfang noch radikal belegten Stimme höre ich mich in dieser Show von Chono Pozo erzählen, also von den Anfängen selbst ... 

indem wir uns für einen Augenblick in das Jahr 1948 versetzen: es ist der 2. Dezember und noch tanzt im Rio Cafe Chano Pozo zu seinem in Jukebox spielenden Hit Manteca. Eusebio Munoz, Ex-US-Army-Korporal und Chanos Mariuhana-Dealer, wird in wenigen Takten das Lokal betreten und Chano rücklinks erschießen. Der Kriegsvetreran hatte Streit mit Chano, der über die Qualität der gelieferten Ware erbost war und nicht zahlen wollte. Es war dies nicht Chanos erster Auftritt in Schiesseren, mehrmals verwundet kam er schon davon - nicht aber an diesem Tag. In Chanos Schuhen, so wird erzählt, fand man 25000 Dollar. Geld und Prestige verdankte er seinen Hits Blen-Blen-Blen, Pin-Pon-Pan, Nagüe, Llora ... in den USA war er erst seit einem Jahr und konnte schon mit und für Dizzy Gillespie auf Empfehlung von Mario Bauza, der mit Dizzy in der Swing-Big-Band von Cab Calloway (Mr. Hi-De-Ho) gespielt hatte, Manteca schreiben und mit Dizzys Band am 29 September 1947 in der Carnegie Hall die Afro-Cuban-Suite präsentieren ...
